Mona Jane Van Duyn (May 9, 1921 - December 2, 2004) was an American poet.

Life

Van Duyn was innate witharound 1921 in Waterloo, Iowa. She grew higher in the settlement of Eldora, Iowa (pop. 3,200) inside which she underst& voraciously in the town library and wrote verse form secretly in notebooks from either her primary school years to her highschool years. Van Duyn earned the B.The. degree from either Northern Iowa University in 1942, and an M.The. from either a University of Iowa in 1943, the month she married Jarvis Thurston. She & Thurston exposed in the Ph.D. program at Iowa. Inside 1946 she was hired as an teacher at a University of Louisville when her husband became an helper prof there. Together it began Perspective: The Quarterly of Literature around 1947 & shifted that journal to Washington University in St. Louis when they moved there in 1950. Van Duyn was the lecturer inside the University College adult education program until her retirement in 1990. Within 1983, a year fallowing she experienced published her fifth book of verse form, she was known as an adjunct Prof in a English Department & became the "Visiting Hurst Professor" in 1987, the month she was invited to become a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.

Van Duyn was the friend of poet James Merrill and was instrumental in securing his papers for the Wa University Favorite Collections in the mid 1960s. She died of bone cancer, aged 83.

Career

Van Duyn won each major U.S. prize for poetry, including a National Book Award, the Bollingen Prize, the Ruth Lilly Prize and the Pulitzer Prize. She was the U.S. poet laureate between 1992 and 1993. Despite her award, her career fluctuated between praise & obscurity. Her views of love and marriage ranged from a scathing to the optimistic. Within "What I Want to Say", she wrote of love: However within "Late Loving", she wrote: To Understand, To Choose was a gathered verse form that, around 1970, gathered together deuce-ace former books & a few ungathered operate, & won the National Book Award. Inside 1981 she became the fellow in the Academy of American Poets and then, in 1985, one of a xii Chancellors world health organization help for life. The recent Collected Poems, Whenever It Exist as Non We (1992) involved iv volumes that experienced appeared since her number 1 collected verse form.
